CT Scans

Skylar had his CT scans of his brain/head and face this week. He was such a trooper, and revealed a special intelligence in the process. We were trying to get him to take the medicine to sedate him. We tried once and he basically spit it all back at us. Then the anesthesiologist came in with two syringes. One empty one to show him how it worked, and to play. The other syringe actually had the medicine. Skylar had a great time with the empty syringe, and put it in his mouth and pushed the plunger numerous times. When the anesthesiologist handed him the syringe with the medicine in it, Skylar was not fooled, he immediately saw the little bit of medicine in the syringe and pointed it at the wall pushed the plunger squirting half of the medicine at the wall. This was just so funny to all of us. We all had a great giggle.  :)  The anesthesiologist said it was the quickest/smartest funny reaction he had ever seen. :)

So, Skylar received an anesthesia squirt in his one working nostril. Remarkably, with all of this anesthesia Skylar was still awake and fighting sleepiness an hour later. He received more medicine squirted in his nose. He still fought sleepiness. His anesthesiologist was calling him the "Arnold Schwarzeneger" of pediatric sedation.  Finally, he went to sleep and blessedly they did not have to give him IV sedation.

Eventually, Skylar fell asleep and we got great CT images. The greatest gift of all of this sedation was that after he became sleepy I was able to hold him for hours. I thoroughly enjoyed cuddling him while he slept.

The pediatric anesthesiologist, the day surgery nurses, CT techs, and recovery nurses were very empathetic and patient. DH and I were very happy with our experience. They all strived to make us comfortable, and make it as stress free as possible. Bless them all.
